SAD BRIDES is about Jo
Slater, a woman who gets married for the wrong reasons. After her divorce, Jo
is thrown into her first real depression. In bed, she stares at her
wedding picture and wonders….Who was that girl, what was she
thinking? Was she in love? Did she know all along she was making a big
mistake? With the help of her friends, Dr. Judy, and her own voice, each chapter brings Jo one step closer to the answers.
Sad
Brides has 16 chapters and 143 pages. Below is a synopsis of the
first five chapters.
Chapter
One JOHN
After seven years of
marriage John walks out. Jo thinks he needs some space. It wasn’t until the
message from hell, (the other woman) that Jo realizes John was
cheating. Of course there were signs! She just didn’t see them, or chose
not to. Jo questions….Why
didn’t I know John was cheating? How could I have been so stupid? Why
did I get married in the first place?
Chapter
Two MOTHER
Even though it’s a
cliché to always blame the mother, Jo does. The only lullaby her mother
ever sang was “Here comes the bride.” When Jo finally brought home a
“live one” it was Jo’s job to reel this one in. Jo wonders….Did
I get married to make my mother happy? to make her proud? to finally shut
her up?
Chapter
Three FIRST SHRINK
The first time Jo goes
into therapy is because all her friends are in therapy. She feels stupid
compared to her fascinating friends. In her first session, the therapist
tells her she has low self esteem. Jo is thrilled! Now she has something
to say! Secretly, Jo is unsure what self esteem means. She quits when her
best friend goes onto yoga. Jo laments…Do
I do everything my friends do? Am I
the world leader of all the followers?
Chapter
Four PHOTOGRAPHY
Jo is a photographer.
She shoots mostly weddings…in black and white. Everyone says her
pictures are artistic, but Jo does not consider herself an artist
(Picasso is an artist). Jo looks through her archive and is happy she isn’t
the only sad bride. There are many. Jo contemplates…I love sad
photographs. But everybody likes happy ones. Nobody wants a picture of a
sad bride.
Chapter
Five FIRST LOVE
Kenny was Jo’s first
love. She was 11. When he kissed her, Jo pretended not to care. She didn’t
want Kenny to think she was a slut and let all the boys kiss her. At
school, Kenny starts hanging out with Linda. It hurt really bad. Jo
wonders…Why
didn’t she tell Kenny she loved him? Was she too proud to beg? Is Kenny
the first of a long line of men who would betray me?
